The Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN), a partnernship between UNCG and North Carolina A&T University, was founded in 2007 after at least two years of planning. Dr. James G. Ryan was hired as the JSNN’s founding dean in July 2008. In January 2010, the UNC System officially approved the first degree programs at JSNN: a Ph.D. in nanoscience and a professional Master’s of Science in nanoscience, both of which were to be awarded by UNCG. Then, in Fall 2010, the first classes as JSNN began.
The school offers master’s and PhD level coursework and degrees in nanoscience and nanoengineering. The JSNN is based out of Gateway University Research Park on East Gate City Boulevard.
At its founding the JSNN leased space in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s building at the Gateway University Research Park. On December 7, 2011, an opening ceremony was held for a newly-constructed 105,000 square foot building that would serve as the permanent home for JSNN.
