Mary Frances Stone graduated from the Woman’s College in 1947, obtaining a B.S. in Home Economics. Six months after graduation, she was killed in a car accident. In her honor, her parents, Clarence and Jane Stone, liberally supported home economics education throughout North Carolina, including establishing The Mary Frances Stone Teaching Excellence Award. The honor recognizes tenured and non-tenure track faculty in the School of Health and Human Sciences for teaching excellence. In 1956, the former Home Economics Building was renamed the Mary Frances Stone Building, in her honor.
