Timothy Johnston

Timothy Johnston is a professor of psychology at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), where from 2002 to 2016, he served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.  Johnston was born in Manchester, England, in 1949.  He received his B.Sc. degree in Ecology from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) in 1970, his M.S, in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1974, and his Ph.D. in Biobehavioral Sciences from the University of Connecticut in 1978. From 1978-1979, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the North Carolina Foundation for Mental Health Research in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1982, he joined the Department of Psychology at UNCG as a lecturer and research associate. He became an assistant professor in 1983, an associate professor in 1988, and was Director of Graduate Studies for the department from 1989-1990. In 1990 he became Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, serving in that capacity until 1997. From 1997 until his appointment as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2002, he served as Head of the Department of Psychology.  During Johnston’s tenure as Dean, the College of Arts and Sciences grew tremendously, adding five new doctoral programs, and 186 new faculty members.
