Tau Pi Delta

In 1921, the college organized an honor society, Tau Pi Delta, to recognize campus leaders. The eleven charter members were selected on the basis of college spirit, character, intellect, leadership, and special ability.

In 1923, the members decided to disband, stating that the group’s existence went counter to the notion that the “all-round type of college girl should be and was the rule instead of the exception.” As a reminder of their brief existence, the members of Tau Pi Delta erected a stone marker in Peabody Park with a bronze plaque bearing the organization’s letters and an image of a “flame of service.”
