Tartan

In 2002, the University began work on a custom tartan design, with a specific pattern in the school colors, to honor its founder Charles McIver’s Scots-Irish heritage. Helen Dennison, the University’s associate vice chancellor for university relations at that time, explained in an article in the Greensboro News and Record that the tartan would be a new tradition for students and alumni, and “a different way of showing their pride and association with the university.”  The design of the tartan was completed in 2005, and a line of apparel items featuring the tartan were marketed.  The tartan was officially registered for authenticity with the Scottish Tartan Society in Scotland.
