Stanley Llewellyn Jones

Stanley Llewellyn Jones was Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) from 1971 until his retirement in 1983. He was born and raised in Wisconsin, and received both his B.S. and M.A. degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He working on his doctorate in history at the University of Illinois, but his studies were interrupted by the outset of World War II. From 1942 to 1945, while serving in the army, Jones received training at the Pentagon as a combat historian. After World War II, he completed his studies at the University of Illinois, receiving his Ph.D. in 1947.  He then became a professor of history at the University of Illinois-Chicago.  During Jones’ time at UNCG, student enrollment grew from 6,700 to over 10,000, and the faculty expanded from 452 appointments (both full and part-time) to 624 appointments.  He died in 2010 at the age of 91.
