Mary Taylor Moore was born in rural Wake County in 1884, and raised in Mount Airy, North Carolina. She graduated from the State Normal and Industrial College (now UNCG) in 1903 and then briefly taught 5th grade in Salisbury, North Carolina. She returned to the College in 1904 as a Latin instructor and in 1909 was appointed Registrar of the University. Moore would serve in that position until her death in 1948, at the age of 64. The Moore-Strong Residence Hall, which opened in 1960, is partially named in her honor.
