Medallion

The Medallion of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is the ceremonial medallion worn by the UNCG Chancellor on a velvet ribbon during special academic occasions. Also known as the Chain-of-Office Medallion, it is hand-chased in sterling silver, and bears the seal of the University (identical to the seal on the ceremonial Mace). At the 1979 commencement exercises of the University, the Medallion was presented to then Chancellor James S. Ferguson by the Class of 1929, as a gift to the University on the fiftieth anniversary of their commencement. Chancellor Ferguson began the tradition of the Chancellor wearing the Medallion at special academic occasions by wearing it at the very same 1979 commencement. The Medallion was made by the same Portuguese Silver Guild which made the Mace the previous year.
