The first social work class at UNCG was offered in 1935 through the Department of Sociology. Social work classes continued in the Department of Sociology even when, in 1958, the department changed its name to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. In 1973, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology separated, and social work courses were still taught in the Department of Sociology. In 1976 the Department of Social Work was established and today, operates out of the School of Health and Human Sciences. It offers an undergraduate program in social work which prepares students for beginning generalist social work practice. In 1997, it created a Joint Master of Social Work Program with North Carolina A & T State University.
