Department of Economics

Posted on October 11, 2016

The first course in economics at UNCG was offered in 1912 under the newly renamed Department of History and Economics. In 1917, the economics portion of the department was merged with sociology to create the Department of Sociology and Economics. When the Department of Social Sciences was introduced in 1924, economics was taught as a concentration within the Department. In 1936, the Department of Economics was formed out of the Department of Social Sciences and expanded become the Department of Economics and Business Administration in 1963. The Department of Business Administration assimilated into the Administration and Management Science Department in 1971, leaving Economics to be an independent department. Today, the Department of Economics offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees.
