Starting in the 1970s, the Office of Campus Recreation began sponsoring intramural and club sports at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), as well as more informal recreation opportunities and events for students and faculty. One of the earliest events was the Student-Faculty “Scotch” Golf Foursomes, which ran for several semesters in the early 1970s. By 1972, intramural sports at UNCG included basketball, billiards, bowling, football, golf, softball, tennis, table tennis, and volleyball. The 1982 Campus Recreation Handbook lists the club sports at UNCG as Baseball, Fencing, Frisbee, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Karate, Rugby, Soccer, Swimming, Table Tennis, and Weightlifting. Although the number of club and intramural sports has come and gone from year to year, student participation has remained robust and constant across the decades. In 2017, Intramural Sports is one of the most active programs on campus with more than 10,000 participations annually, at badminton, basketball, battle canoes, flag football, floor hockey, indoor and sand volleyball, racquetball, soccer, table tennis, and Xbox. In 1995, the Office of Campus Recreation became the Department of Campus Recreation. In addition to overseeing intramural and club sports on campus, the Department operates the campus recreation center, Rosenthal pool, the Outdoor Adventures trips program, the 40-acre Piney Lake facility, and the TeamQUEST team-building program.
