David Armstrong was the Dean of the School of Education at UNCG from 1997 until his retirement in 2001. Armstrong arrived at UNCG from Texas A&M University, where he had served as Associate Dean of the College of Education from 1991 to 1995. He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Stanford University in 1962 and went on to work for the U.S. Army Intelligence as a Bulgarian translator from 1962 to 1965. After leaving the army, he then earned his M.A. degree in education from the University of Montana in 1967, and his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Washington in 1973. After a brief stint as an assistant professor at Western Washington State College in Bellingham, Washington, he landed at Texas A&M in 1975. He worked his way through the faculty ranks to become a full professor in 1984, and Associate Dean in 1991. Upon Armstrong’s retirement in 2001, he and his wife Nancy (also an educator) gave $25,000 to establish the David G. and Nancy J. Armstrong Graduate Scholarship in Education Fund. David Armstrong died in 2003, after a succumbing to a viral illness.
