Beginning in 1990, UNCG began playing baseball as an official intercollegiate sport. The team claimed the Big South title in 1994 and 1997, earned a bid to the NCAA South I regional in 1997, and in 2006 earned its first win over a top ranked team, defeating the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2016, the team finished second in the 2016 Southern Conference standings, leading the nation in batting average hits, doubles, triples, slugging percentage, on base percentage, as well as finishing in the top 10 nationally in 11 offensive categories. The baseball program has signed 69 former players to professional contracts, with 18 of them being drafted in the top 10 rounds
