Coursework in archaeology was offered by the Departments of Classical Studies and Anthropology prior to the establishment of an archaeology program in 1986. Beginning in the 1986-1987 academic year, students were able to complete an Interdisciplinary Studies major or minor with a concentration in archaeology. Jeffrey S. Soles of the Department of Classical Studies served as the first chairman of the Archaeology Program.
In the 1990-1991 academic year, the Archaeology Program became part of the Special Programs in Liberal Studies, a unit within the College of Arts and Sciences.
In 2024 the Archaeology Program became an undergraduate minor within the School of Liberal and Professional Studies. The Archaeology program continues within the Department of Ancient Mediterranean Studies and Archaeology (AMSA).
