Students at the Rock
Students at the Rock

The 12.7 ton rock, also known as “The Rawk,” was donated by Alpha Phi Omega fraternity in 1973. Originally located between the Quad and the Dining Hall, it is currently located between the Library and the Dining Hall, close to the Clock Tower. The Rock functions as a kind of student advertising forum, where any UNCG student group can decorate the Rock with information about an event they may be holding, usually with spray paint. There is a general understanding that once the Rock is decorated in a certain manner, that decoration must be left up for 24 hours before it can be painted over. As of the present day, the Rock has been painted over so many times that the physical landscape of the Rock has changed, with new bumps and drips of hundreds of coats of UNCG history accumulating on it’s surface.
